Pharmacology

Pharmacodynamics

Salicylic acid is a keratolytic agent. It encourages the peeling of the top layer of the skin and opening up of the plugged follicles, which helps re-establish the normal skin- cell replacement cycle. For milder acne, salicylic acid helps unclog pores to resolve and prevent lesions. It does not have any effect on the production of the sebum or P. acnes. Like many other topical acne treatments, salicylic acid must be used continuously, even after acne lesions have healed.

Pharmacokinetics

Salicylic acid is absorbed percutaneously. This absorption depends on the concentration of salicylic acid, the level of hydration of the skin, the frequency of application, area of application and the presence of occlusion.

Indications

Should be used as part of the daily cleansing routine for the treatment and prevention of acne. SASLIC is prescribed for slightly oily skin..

Dosage and Administration

Take two actuations (i.e., approximately 1 ml of solution) and gently massage the foam all over the wet face avoiding eyes and surrounding areas. Allow it to remain for 20 to 30 seconds. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry. Use twice daily.

Contraindications

SASLIC and SASLIC DS are contraindicated for known hypersensitivity to either salicylic acid or any of its components in the formulation.

Warnings and Precautions

For external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membrane. Consult with your doctor in case of unusual dryness, redness and peeling of the skin.

Salicylic acid should be avoided at least 6 weeks after recovery from chickenpox or receiving the varicella vaccine. Although systemic toxicity has not been associated with topical acne products containing salicylic acid, the possibility of percutaneous absorption of the drug dictates a cautious approach.

Drug Interactions

The keratolytic properties of salicylic acid can be enhanced by some products such as abrasive soap or cleansers, alcohol-containing preparations, products containing benzoyl peroxide, resorcinol, sulphur or topical retinoids.

Pregnancy

There has been conflicting evidence on whether or not salicylates are teratogenic, but when used in late pregnancy, they may cause haemorrhage in the newborn infant. Consequently, salicylic acid preparations are best avoided during pregnancy.

Lactation

The drug is excreted in breast milk and is contraindicated in lactating mothers.

Paediatric Use

Young children may be at increased risk of unwanted effects because of the increased absorption of salicylic acid through the skin. It should not be used in children younger than 2 years of age.

Undesirable Effects

Salicylic acid is a mild irritant and may cause dermatitis. The most common side- effects are dryness and scaling.

2 years
